W&M Field Hockey Falls to No. 18 Old Dominion

(Tribe Athletics)

Box Score

WILLIAMSBURG — Pyper Friedman scored her second goal of the season and Maddie George totaled 11 saves, but William & Mary suffered a 4-1 setback to No. 18 Old Dominion on Sunday afternoon at Busch Field.

The Monarchs (4-0) were the third nationally-ranked opponent for the Tribe in the opening four games.

Friedman converted a penalty stroke with just under 11 minutes remaining in the contest. It was her first career penalty stroke and the 13th goal of her career. The stroke was earned off the Tribe’s first penalty corner of the game. Olivia Stocks’s shot from the left side was cleared off the line by ODU defender Sian Emslie, but it was ruled to be illegally touched, resulting in the stroke.

George racked up double-digit saves for the third time in as many games this season. It marks the seventh of her W&M career. She also moved up into seventh on the Tribe’s career saves list with 246.

Old Dominion scored once in each quarter, including three off-penalty corner opportunities. Sanci Molkenboer collected a rebound and pushed it across less than four minutes into the game to give the Monarchs the early lead.

Tess Jedeloo scored twice on the afternoon for ODU, once each in the second and third quarters. She pushed one across off pass from Molkenboer in the crease in the 21st minute. Jedeloo converted from the top of the circle off a penalty corner in the 35th minute.

W&M (0-4) nearly pulled one back in the closing minute of the third quarter. On the play, freshman Josette DeGour had the ball along the left endline and centered a shot on frame. The attempt deflected off the stick of a Monarch player but was kept out of the cage by ODU goalkeeper Suus Broers.

The Monarchs tallied another goal off rebound from a corner with just over two minutes remaining by Emslie for the final margin.
