Defending CAA Champions Garner No. 2 Seed in League Tourney

(Tribe Athletics)

RICHMOND — William & Mary received No. 2 seed in the CAA Women’s Tennis Championship, the league announced on Monday. The 28-time champion Tribe will travel to Elon’s Jimmy Powell Tennis Center to take part in the event, April 25-28.

As a result of earning a top-four seed, W&M received an opening-round bye and will open competition in the quarterfinals on Friday, April 26. The Tribe faces the winner of No. 7 Campbell and No. 10 Towson at 2 p.m. Admission is free to all matches at the CAA Championship. In the event of inclement weather, the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center in Greensboro, N.C. (21 Oak Branch Drive), will be used as a back-up indoor site.

The Tribe has been the No. 1 or No. 2 seed in 22 of the last 26 CAA Championships. W&M is 7-2 all-time at the No. 2 seed and won the league title from the second line in 2022 at Elon.

W&M enters the CAA Championship on an 11-match winning streak, the fourth-longest mark in school history, and at 15-5 overall on the year. The Green and Gold was 6-0 in league action this year with victories over No. 3 seed Charleston, No. 5 Elon, No. 6 UNCW, No. 7 Campbell, No. 9 Hofstra, and No. 10 Towson.

The Tribe has a long history of dominating CAA competition, and more importantly the CAA Championship. The Tribe has won 28 of the CAA’s 38 all-time women’s tennis championships and finished as the runner up on seven other occasions. Last season, W&M won its second-straight CAA title under head coach Jessica Giuggioli, downing UNCW, 4-0, in the championship match.

Since the league adopted its current, head-to-head team format for the CAA Championship in 1995, the Green and Gold is 69-9 (.885) at the event. Overall, since the first season of CAA tennis, the Tribe is 168-23 (.880) all-time versus league opponents. In matches with current CAA teams, the Green and Gold owns a 65-5 (.929) all-time record, including 21-straight wins over league foes.

The 2024 championship field was reduced to 12 teams after North Carolina A&T informed the conference that it was unable to participate due to injuries to several players on its roster.

Competition begins on Thursday with four first-round matches. At 10 a.m., No. 8 Hampton (13-8) meets No. 9 Hofstra (8-10) and No. 5 Elon (13-9) takes on No. 12 Monmouth (3-14). At 2 p.m., No. 7 Campbell (11-8) goes against No. 10 Towson (6-10) and No. 6 UNCW (10-7) faces No. 11 Stony Brook (3-13).

There are four quarterfinal contests on Friday. At 10 a.m., top-seeded Delaware (18-6) meets the Hampton/Hofstra winner and No. 4 Drexel (11-7) takes on the Elon/Monmouth winner. At 2 p.m., the Tribe challenges the Campbell/Towson winner and No. 3 Charleston (17-4) faces the UNCW/Stony Brook winner.

The winners advance to Saturday’s semifinals, which will be held at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. The championship match will be played at 2 p.m. on Sunday, with an automatic berth to the NCAA Women’s Tennis Championship on the line.
