After dropping eight of its final nine matches to end the regular season, being able to hit the reset button for the postseason was just what Tabb’s volleyball team needed.
With a clean slate, Tabb took care of business during Monday’s Conference 27 quarterfinal match against York in straight sets 25-14, 25-11, 25-16.
“It’s very nice to see that they came out so strong, because our next match will not be easy,” Tabb Coach Mike Honeycutt said.
The Tigers started slow in the first set as York jumped out to a quick 6-2 advantage. Tabb battled back to tie the first set at 9-9 and never looked back, using a 9-0 run to cruise to a 25-14 opening set victory.
Honeycutt was pleased with Tabb’s performance in the second set in which the Tigers never trailed after losing the first point of the set.
After splitting the first four points with York, Tabb pulled away thanks to a 6-0 run that put the Tigers up 13-6. Strong play from Tabb’s front line paired with errors from York allowed the Tigers to win the second set 25-11.
York made things interesting in the third set after falling behind 6-2 and rebounding to tie the set at 6-6. The momentum was short-lived, however, as Tabb resumed its strong play and eventually built a 20-10 lead over the Falcons before closing out the set 25-16.
While pleased with Tabb’s performance against York, Honeycutt knows the road out of the conference tournament will only get more difficult from here.
“We’re going to take things one game at a time,” he said after the win. “If we play with this level of intensity and bring a little bit more, we’re going to do well.”
Tabb (5-14) will travel to take on top-seeded I.C. Norcom in the Conference 27 semifinals on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, York (2-15) ends its season having won two of its final five matches after starting the season 0-12.

Warhill Advances to Conference Semis
Outside of a disappointing second set loss, Warhill cruised to victory at home against New Kent 25-17, 19-25, 25-12, 25-7 in Monday’s Conference 25 quarterfinal round.
Cori Clifton’s triple-double of 14 kills, 13 assists and 10 digs helped pace the Lions throughout the match. Chloe Wilmoth was a kill away from a double-double, logging 26 assists, nine kills and six digs.
Warhill won the first set comfortably by eight points before stopping the second set by six points.
With the match knotted up at 1-1, Warhill picked up its play and romped New Kent during the final two sets by 13 and 18 points, respectively.
Warhill (14-5) now advances to the Conference 25 semifinal round where a road match against Park View awaits Wednesday.

Lafayette Sweeps Denbigh in Conference 18 First Round
Lafayette had no trouble defeating Denbigh in straight sets at home during Monday’s Conference 18 first-round match.
Behind well-rounded play from Lafayette’s starters, the Rams eased past Denbigh 25-12, 25-14, 25-9.
Abby Goetsch led Lafayette with 18 assists and seven aces, while Madison Vandall had eight digs and three aces. Lindsay Wainwright added seven kills for the Rams in the win.
Lafayette (12-9) will travel to play Grafton in the Conference 18 semifinal round Wednesday.

Bruton Eliminated in Conference 33 Semis
Bruton’s volleyball season came to a close Monday as the Panthers fell in four sets to top-seeded Washington & Lee during the Conference 33 semifinals.
After dropping the first set, Bruton battled back and took the second set by a tally of 25-19.
The final two sets were intense battles between the two teams with each decided by two points. Washington & Lee managed to edge Bruton 25-23 in the third set and escaped the Panthers 29-27 in the fourth set to secure the match.
Bruton (5-16) ended its season on a five-match losing streak, but fared relatively well throughout the year considering the Panthers returned only two players from last year and brought in new Coach Kevin Doloresco.
Individual statistics were not reported for this match.
