Smithfield pulled no punches as the Packers trounced Tabb 41-7 Saturday at Bailey Field and put a damper on Tabb’s homecoming festivities.
Nicholas Turner of Smithfield dominated the day, accounting for four total touchdowns — one passing and three on the ground. Turner got the scoring started in the first quarter when he completed a 39-yard pass to Aaron Williams to put the Packers on top 7-0.
Turner made his mark again in the second quarter, busting off a 43-yard run to extend Smithfield’s lead to 14-0 with 8:02 left in the first half.
Tabb tried to respond on its next drive, but a fumble by quarterback Alec Kurek gave the ball back to Smithfield. The Packers wasted no time taking advantage as William Robinson squirted free for a 41-yard touchdown run.
By halftime, Smithfield held a commanding 21-0 advantage over the Tigers.
“Smithfield came out and played well,” said Tabb Coach Matt Lawson. “They did a good job running their offense and we didn’t do a good job against their offense. That was the bottom line.”
Tabb’s offense, which was held in check during the first 24 minutes of play, showed signs of life at the start of the second half.
After forcing Smithfield to turn the ball over on downs, Tabb running back Carter Wood found a hole on the left side of the line and broke free for a 40-yard touchdown run. Wood finished the game with 113 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries. A Stanley Henderson kick made the score 21-7 in favor of Smithfield.
Smithfield only needed three plays to shut down any momentum Tabb had built from Wood’s touchdown. From Smithfield’s 36-yard line, Turner bolted to the near sideline and ran 64 yards for his third touchdown of the game. A failed two-point conversion gave Smithfield a 20-point lead with 5:11 left in the third quarter.
Tabb was held to a three-and-out on its ensuing drive, but Henderson’s punt was fumbled by Smithfield and Kurek recovered the fumble at Smithfield’s 27-yard line. The Tigers were unable to take advantage of the good field position as Kurek fumbled the ball and gave Smithfield the ball back.
On the next play from scrimmage, Smithfield’s Robinson found a hole in the defense, broke loose and scampered 82 yards for the longest touchdown of the game. Smithfield held a 34-7 lead with 2:10 left in the third quarter.
Trailing by 27 points, Lawson made a mass substitution on offense to give Tabb’s second-string players a chance to see the field.
Smithfield finished the game’s scoring as Turner plunged up the middle for a 1-yard touchdown, his third rushing score of the contest.
Tabb (3-3) will look to get back to its winning ways during a road game against York next Friday.

Greenbrier Christian Academy Runs Past Hampton Roads Academy
Hampton Roads Academy struggled to keep pace with an explosive Greenbrier Christian Academy offense during a 41-19 road loss Friday.
The Navigators had trouble containing Gators’ quarterback Corey Vickers, who threw for nearly 250 yards and accounted for four touchdowns.
After surrendering 12 points in the first quarter, HRA got on the board in the second quarter when Devone Humphrey broke free for a 24-yard touchdown to bring the Navigators within six points.
Vickers responded in a big way for Greenbrier Christian Academy, helping the Gators take a 27-6 halftime lead after throwing two touchdown passes in the second quarter.
Humphrey found the end zone again in the third quarter for HRA during a 10-yard touchdown run. A failed two-point conversion meant the Navigators still trailed by 15 points.
HRA pulled within eight points as Humphrey scored his third touchdown of the game on a 14-yard touchdown run that made the score 27-19.
After forcing Greensbrier Christian Academy to punt, HRA quarterback Chris Leavey was picked off by Greenbrier Christians’ Colby Lee and saw his pass returned 57 yards for a touchdown.
Vickers put the game out of reach as he tossed a 73-yard touchdown to Da’kendall James for the game’s final score.
HRA (2-4) will hit the road for a cross-state trip against North Cross (Roanoke) next Friday.
