SURRY — The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has announced that the ferry boat, Pocahontas, has returned to the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry’s fleet.

On Oct. 14, VDOT announced that the ferry line would be running at reduced capacity while its boats, Pocahontas and Powhatan, were out for repairs. Both boats are capable of carrying up to seventy vehicles per trip while their smaller counterparts, Surry and Williamsburg, can only carry fifty per trip.

Today (Oct. 19), VDOT released information stating that Pocahontas, which was built in 1995, has been returned to the fleet after undergoing routine maintenance and overhaul. Powhatan, built in 2019, remains out for ongoing repairs.

The ferry is open twenty-four hours a day, 365 days a year and is free for all customers. The approximately twenty minute journey connects Surry and Jamestown across the James River.
