WILLIAMSBURG — CultureFix’s Winter Blues Jazz Festival, returning for its ninth year Jan. 13-16, will close with a special tribute to the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Winter Blues Jazz Fest will hold the free tribute event on Monday, Jan. 16. The event is open to the public at the William & Mary Alumni House, where attendees will experience a live musical performance by Victor Haskins that honors King’s life starting at 10 a.m.

The tribute, titled “The Other America…Is Here, Now,” is described as a multimedia/musical tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The concert will feature original music and special arrangements of historically-relevant music to honor King and his ideas.

According to reports, instead of drawing inspiration from the iconic “I Dreamed a Dream” speech given by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., this program draws from one of his lesser-known speeches titled “The Other America.” Parallels will be drawn between this
speech, given more than 50 years ago, and issues of the current day to show how King’s America and the America of today share much in common.
