Willie (Will) H. Mumford Jr., 91, of Williamsburg, Virginia, passed away peacefully on September 1, 2025. A devoted husband, father, stepfather, grandfather, uncle, and friend, Will lived a life marked by integrity, generosity, and quiet strength.
Born on July 2, 1934, in Kenly, North Carolina, Will was the son of the late Willie H. Mumford Sr. and Ila Woodard. He was predeceased by his sisters Dorothy and Gladys, and is survived by his sister Melba Jane.
Will graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1956, where he was a proud member of the Alpha Kappa Psi fraternity. He went on to serve honorably in the United States Army, and later built a distinguished career at Aetna Life & Casualty Insurance Company, retiring in 1989 as Assistant Vice President of Administration after dedicating his entire professional life to the company.
In retirement, Will embraced a peaceful and active lifestyle. He spent his days on the tennis court and golf course, reading books, solving crossword puzzles, and cheering on his beloved Tar Heels.
Will participated in activities within the communities where he resided. He contributed to the incorporation of Varnumtown, North Carolina, was a member of the town council, and assisted in securing funding for infrastructure projects, including the development of a public boat ramp. Will also served as a board member for his neighborhood, having previously held the positions of Board President and Architectural Committee member.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 45 years, Roberta (Bobbie) Mumford, and by his children and stepchildren: Linda Mumford, Lisa Shriver (Chris), Rich Greenwood (Nina), and Steven Greenwood (deceased). He was a loving grandfather to Jake, Laura, Aidan, and Reid Shriver; Evan Greenwood; and Lucas and Claire Greenwood. Will had numerous extended family members in North Carolina, whom he loved deeply.
Will was a steady presence in the lives of those who knew him — a patient teacher, a loyal friend, and a man of quiet discipline and deep love. His legacy lives on in the countless memories shared by his family and friends, and in the values he instilled in those fortunate enough to know him.
A memorial service will be held at a later date to honor Will’s life. In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations to a charity of your choice in Will’s memory.
