Life’s journey for Sergeant First Class Retired SFC(R) Carl R. Blanks began December 3, 1951, in Wilmington, North Carolina, to the late Nathan and Nina B. Bowen.

He was raised in the home of his late grandparents, Sidney and Mertie B. Blanks, with assistance and support from his late aunt Joyce M. Blanks and uncle Sherman L. Blanks. SFC (R) Carl Blanks, 73, passed away on July 31, 2025, in Newport News, Virginia. He was also preceded in death by his granddaughter Leshay Tiana Perry and brother Nathan Bowen Jr.

Carl’s life was rooted in strong Christian values, which shaped his journey. He was a member of Graham Chapel AME Zion Church in the East Arcadia community in his early years. He was a proud graduate of East Arcadia High School, Class of 1970. Following his graduation, Carl answered the call to serve his country. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in October 1971 as an Aircraft Maintenance Tech Sergeant. In December 1974, he transitioned into the US Army. While in the Army, he performed duties as a Hercules Missile Crewman, Tactical Trans, Utility Helicopter Repairer, Drill Sergeant, and Instructor at the Aviation School at Ft. Eustis, VA. He completed a total of twenty-two years of service, retiring from Fort Eustis, VA, in 1994.

After his military career, Carl continued to serve others, working for Howmet Aerospace for seventeen years as a shift supervisor. He lived his life with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to his family. Carl was a true embodiment of love, service, and faith.

Carl will be remembered as a fighter, a man who never complained despite the challenges he faced. He was a hero in his own right— always providing for his family, offering strength when needed, and showing unshakable faith. He was a constant presence in the lives of those he loved, always there with open arms and an open heart. His resilience, kindness, and dedication to family will forever be cherished by those who knew him. He will be deeply missed, but his memory will continue to inspire all who were blessed to know him.
