Buford William “Bill” Cyphers Jr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on June 23, 2025 at the Hospice House of Williamsburg in Williamsburg, Virginia at the age of 84. Born on January 7, 1941 in Richlands, Virginia, Bill lived a life marked by dedication to his family, his work, and his community.
Bill was a member of the 1963 class at Randolph-Macon College, and was a man of many talents and interests. He owned and operated Cyphers Plumbing and Heating, and he also built houses in Northern Virginia, leaving a lasting mark on the communities he served. His work was not just a profession but a testament to his commitment to quality and service.
Bill was an avid golfer, spending countless hours perfecting his swing at country clubs, Deer Park and in Hilton Head. He often practiced in his own backyard, sharing his love for the game with friends and family. Beyond the greens, Bill found joy in walking a cherished dog, Henry, and was known for his generous spirit and willingness to help others.
A devout member and Deacon at Orcutt Baptist Church in Newport News, Bill’s faith was a cornerstone of his life. He was deeply involved in church activities and found great fulfillment in helping those in need, embodying the values of compassion and service. Previously, Bill was a very active member of Providence United Methodist Church in Yorktown, VA.
Bill is preceded in death by his parents, Buford Cyphers Sr. and Ola May Cyphers; his daughter, Cynthia Cay Cyphers; his son, Paul David Cyphers; his brother, Robert Cyphers; and his previous wife and mother to his daughter Sarah, Linda S. Cyphers.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 10 years, Carolyn Stephenson Peters; his son, Pastor William Todd Cyphers (Glenna) of Centerville, Ohio; his daughters, Leann Dextradeur (Leon) of Virginia Beach, VA, and Sarah Ann Cyphers of Williamsburg, VA; and his step-daughter, Catherine Holloway (Jerry) of Suffolk, VA. Bill also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren, Jordan Carroll (Micah) of Waynesville, Ohio, Jaclyn Baker (Tyler) of Charlotte, NC, Dillion Dextradeur (Sidney) of Virginia Beach, VA, Marcus Holloway of Suffolk, VA, and honorary granddaughter Tiffany Burse of Newport News, VA, along with 10 great-grandchildren, an aunt, and a host of nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held on July 12 at 1:00 PM at Orcutt Baptist Church, 653 Baxter Ln, Newport News, VA 23602, followed by a service at 2:00 PM. A reception will follow, where family and friends can gather to celebrate Bill’s life and legacy.
Bill Cyphers will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to his family, his community, and his faith. His kindness, generosity, and love for helping people have left an indelible impact on all who knew him. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.
