With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Mary Ann, who departed this world peacefully on May 15 at the age of 82. Though her journey was marked by a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer, her spirit remained unshakably full of life, and a vibrant source of love, kindness and strength.
Mary Ann was preceded in death by her parents, May and Bud Kearns and her sister Cathy Jones. She is survived by her devoted husband of 59 years, Peter; her loving children, Stephanie Blosser (Tim), Karen McKenzie and Dan Schoultz (Jiali); and her treasured grandchildren, Hayden & Caroline Blosser and Katie McKenzie, who affectionately called her “Mimi”. She was the cherished eldest of six sisters and is survived by sisters Rose Yeagley, Alice Threlkeld, Joan Sedberry and Terry Hatchett.
Mary Ann was the heart of our family, a gentle, compassionate soul who gave of herself freely and wholeheartedly. She embodied kindness, always believing in the goodness of others and offering unwavering love. One of her greatest expressions of love was through cooking; she had a remarkable talent for creating delicious meals and bringing people together around the table. Her kitchen was a place of comfort, joy and connection. To know Mary Ann was to experience warmth, sincerity, and a meal made with love.
A graduate of St. Vincent Catholic High School in Newport News (‘61) and of George Mason University of Fairfax (‘78), Mary Ann had a creative spirit and a passion for connection. Her gift for storytelling, her warm and welcoming home and her thoughtful gestures left lasting impressions on everyone she encountered. Her warmth and sincerity touched many lives, from her time living in Virginia, Florida, New Jersey or Maryland to her work at the Fairfax City Chamber of Commerce and several travel organizations. She was also dedicated to volunteering at schools, Meals on Wheels, and neighborhood organizations, always seeking ways to help others.
Gone too soon, her absence leaves a space that can never be filled; however, her legacy of compassion, joy, and boundless love will live on in every life she touched.
A celebration of life will be held for family and friends at a future date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Williamsburg House of Mercy or the Lustgarten Foundation.
She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
