Robert Dale Buchwald, 91, of Williamsburg

Captain Robert Dale Buchwald, U.S. Navy, Retired, entered the Navy via Pennsylvania State University and Officer Candidate School and was commissioned in August 1956.

His thirty-year career included tours in six different ships serving as Commanding Officer twice. He also commanded the Fleet Combat Training Center, Dam Neck, Virginia from 1981 to 1983. Designated as a Weapon Systems Sub-specialist after receiving his Master of Science degree in Weapon Systems Engineering (Chemistry), he had numerous combat systems related assignments at Naval Sea Systems Command Headquarters. Captain Buchwald’s decorations include two awards of the Legion of Merit, three awards of the Meritorious Service Medal and two awards of the Navy Commendation Medal, one with Combat V. Bob was a member of the American Society of Naval Engineers, Sigma Xi (The Scientific Research Society), The Surface Navy Association, and Pi Kappa Phi.

After retiring from the service, he and his family settled here in Williamsburg in 1989. In addition to his wife Lucinda (Cindy) and a brother (C. Edward Buchwald) he is survived by his three daughters, Elizabeth, Laurie and Suzanne, and seven grandchildren.

Burial at sea will take place at a later time.
