Richard “Dick” Grills Hyde (COL, USA, Ret.) passed away on December 15, 2024, at the age of 95.
In 1929, Dick was born in Chicago and later attended the University of Cincinnati. He first entered the Army Air Corps in 1950. He entered the Army in 1951, graduating from Officer Candidate School and commissioned an Armor Officer. He served for 31 years with assignments in Vietnam, Germany, and Korea. Locally, Dick was the Public Affairs Officer (PAO) of TRADOC from 1974 – 1979. During his last assignment as PAO for U.S. Forces Korea, he developed a great affection for the country.
After retirement in 1982, he joined Greg Garrett Realty Partners in Newport News, VA where he worked for 36 years eventually as Associate Broker. He loved the real estate business, but most of all he enjoyed his fellow agents and the many home buyers he helped along the way.
Dick’s hobbies included sports such as golf, and reading. He enjoyed golf for many years until limited physically. He always rooted for his beloved Cubs, Redskins, and Cincinnati Bearcats. He became an earnest follower of WWII and Vietnam War history as well as an avid fiction reader.
Dick was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Jocelyn, who passed away in 1999. He is survived by his four sons, Matthew, Richard, Kevin and Christopher; two daughters-in-law, Toni and Peggy; six grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
A Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, January 24, 2025 at Weymouth Funeral Home with interment to follow at 2:00 p.m. at Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery.
