Nathan “Nate” Martin Hess, born on August 14, 1944, in Pennsylvania, peacefully passed away at the age of 80 on November 11, 2024, in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
With a life marked by devoted service, unwavering love for family, and an ever-curious mind, Nate touched all who had the privilege to know him.
A proud graduate of Donegal Springs High School, Nate furthered his studies and graduated from North Carolina State University, laying the foundation for a lifetime of learning and exploration. He dedicated 22 years to serving his country with honor and distinction in the United States Navy, ultimately retiring as a Lieutenant Commander. His post-Navy career as a computer engineer allowed him to indulge his passion for technology and innovation.
Nate was a man of many interests and boundless curiosity. Whether he was engrossed in a competitive game of Scrabble, capturing the world through his lens as a photographer, conversing across the airwaves as a Ham Radio Operator, or crafting beautiful pieces in his woodworking shop, Nate infused joy and creativity into every endeavor. No pastime brought him more happiness than spending cherished moments with his beloved family.
He is remembered for his gentle spirit, his quiet strength, and his enduring love. Preceded in death by his parents, Menno and Amy Hess; sister, Eunice Jones; and brother, John Hess, Nate leaves behind a legacy of love through his surviving wife, Nancy Hess; children, Fr. Chris Hess, Philip Hess and wife Terra, Sarah Giardini and husband James,; and grandchildren, Luca, Emma, and Molly. His siblings, Rachael Ruhl, Daniel Hess, Mariam Kreider, Rhoda Knapp, Mary Angell, and Caleb Hess, along with a wide circle of extended family and friends, will deeply miss his warmth and wisdom.
To celebrate Nate’s remarkable life, a Memorial Mass will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, November 26 at the Church of the Ascension. Friends and family are invited to gather an hour prior to share memories and celebrate the life of a remarkable man who blessed our lives with his presence.
