Nancy Harriet Mason Wicks, lovingly known as Harriet, 87, of Virginia Beach, VA, peacefully passed away in her sleep on November 9, 2024.
Born to the late Paul Bailey Mason and Mary Thompson Mason, Harriet was a spirited and compassionate soul who brought warmth and light to those around her. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 25 years, Lawrence Wicks, with whom she shared an enduring partnership.
Harriet was a proud graduate of Norview High School and dedicated over 25 years to the Chesapeake & Potomac Telephone Company. She raised her two sons, Lawrence Jr. (Bo) and Tim, in the Birchwood community of Virginia Beach, where she was an active and cherished member of the community. Harriet contributed her energy and talents to the Cub Scouts, the PTA, St. Francis Episcopal Church, and as a cheerleading coach for the Thalia Birchwood Malibu youth football league. Known for her boundless enthusiasm, Harriet brought positivity to every role and interaction, always making others feel valued and appreciated.
In her later years, Harriet relocated to the scenic Albemarle Sound in Roper, NC, where she invested in the Knowles House and launched “Essentially Cookie Jars N Stuff,” a cherished shop and gathering space for fellow collectors. She became nationally recognized for her role in organizing the annual McCoy Pottery convention, reflecting her zest for life and her joy in creating connections within her community. Harriet approached every day with a sparkle and a spirit that embraced adventure and kindness.
Harriet is survived by her sons, Lawrence Jr. (Bo) and Timothy Wicks, along with her cherished grandchildren, Amy and Joshua. She leaves behind her dear cousin Nancy Johnson of Mount Airy, NC, and a circle of close family friends who were like daughters to her: Cynthia and Tim Blakeslee, Sonya Darden, Melodie and Bob Hitt, and Kim Darden Orcutt. She was also a treasured aunt and great-aunt to numerous nieces and nephews and had a constant companion in her little buddy, Ray.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Wicks Sr.; her grandson, Timothy (Mason) Wicks Jr.; her long-time companion, Doug Smith; and her six beloved sisters: Marietta and Willie Darden, Mildred and Bob Griesbach, Carolyn and Harold Cohen, Faye and Andy Becker, Karaan Watson, and Kay Mason.
Harriet Wicks will be remembered for her unwavering kindness, her infectious laughter, and her unyielding spirit. Her memory will be cherished by all who were blessed to know her.
