Debora Diane Tolbert, affectionately known to all as Debbie, was born on May 12, 1955, in San Antonio, Texas. She departed this world at her home on September 12, 2024, in Virginia Beach, Virginia, at the age of 69.
Throughout her remarkable life, Debbie embodied resilience, warmth, and an unwavering zest for life. She spent over four decades dedicating herself to her career as a billing clerk at Virginia International Terminals, where her meticulous work ethic and kindness left an indelible mark.
A proud graduate of Old Dominion University with a degree in Early Childhood Education, Debbie had a passion for learning and brightening the lives of others. Her love for sports was legendary among those who knew her; she was a huge sports fan and found immense joy in cheering (and sometimes yelling) on her favorite teams. Equally, she cherished her vacations and cruises, using travel as a canvas to paint memories that would last a lifetime with all her special friends.
Debbie thrived in the company of friends, often dining out and sharing laughter and stories that made her presence unforgettable. Yet, perhaps nothing meant more to her than the moments spent with her beloved father, William Tolbert, with whom she shared an unbreakable bond.
Preceded in death by her mother, Mary Frances Tolbert, Debbie’s legacy is carried forward by her devoted father, her longtime companion Peggy Sontag, her uncle Bill Watts and his wife Carolyn, her aunts Joanne Leinart and Anne Ford, and a wide circle of extended family and friends.
Friends are invited to gather and celebrate Debbie’s life on Wednesday, September 18 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Altmeyer Funeral Home Southside Chapel. It will be a time to remember a woman whose life was rich with love, laughter, and heartfelt connections.
Debbie’s spirit will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing her. Rest in peace, Debbie. Your light will forever shine in our hearts.
Memorial contributions may be made in Debbie’s name to the Virginia Beach Volunteer Rescue Squad.
