Reynaldo Matro Donado, a distinguished individual known for his steadfast dedication and exceptional service, passed away at the age of 90 in Norfolk, Virginia on September 7th, 2024.

Born on November 16th, 1933, in Binakyan Kawit, Cavite, Philippines, to Hermenegildo Donado and Purificacion Matro, Reynaldo’s life was defined by a remarkable journey across continents, marked by a legacy of service and devotion to family.

Reynaldo met Janet Theresa Caparaz in Newport, Rhode Island, and they were united in marriage on December 27th, 1963. Their union fostered a loving family environment, with Reynaldo adopting Telesforo (Terry) Caparaz as his son. Their family expanded with the birth of their son, Reynaldo Donado Jr., on December 6th, 1966, in Charleston, South Carolina. Subsequently, Reynaldo and Janet welcomed Janean Neptune into their home, obtaining custody and raising her as their own.

Reynaldo’s distinguished 22-year career with the United States Navy commenced on December 3rd, 1953. He initially served as a Steward (TN) and later as a Mess Management Specialist (MS1) until his retirement on September 12th, 1975. His naval service included a significant role in Operation Deep Freeze, a series of missions supporting scientific research in Antarctica. Reynaldo served aboard the USS EDISTO (AGB-2) from 1953 to 1961, providing essential logistical support to U.S. research facilities in the harsh Antarctic environment.

On April 10th, 1968, while aboard the USS PRESERVER (ARS-8), Reynaldo played a crucial role in a dramatic rescue operation. The USS PRESERVER responded to an urgent distress call from the British vessel SS PIZARRO, which was on fire in the bay. Despite the crew’s rest, Reynaldo swiftly joined the rescue team, boarding the distressed vessel and extinguishing the fire after a valiant one-hour and fifteen-minute effort. His courageous actions prevented a potentially catastrophic incident, earning the USS PRESERVER a letter of appreciation from the Caribe Shipping Company and commendations from high-ranking naval officials. Throughout his naval career, Reynaldo was honored with the National Defense Service Medal, six Good Conduct Medals, and the Antarctica Service Medal.

After retiring from the Navy, Reynaldo transitioned to a career at the Chrysler Museum of Art as a Security Officer. His meticulous attention to detail ensured the safety and integrity of the museum’s priceless exhibits. Reynaldo expertly managed the museum’s security systems, responded effectively to emergencies, and worked collaboratively with staff and local authorities to maintain a secure and welcoming environment for all visitors.

In his later years, Reynaldo found joy working at a local bookstore on Granby Street, where he took pride in curating a selection of books and snacks. A memorable highlight of his tenure was a visit from the renowned American musician Michael Jackson, who purchased comic books for children, adding a touch of celebrity charm to Reynaldo’s everyday life.

Reynaldo Matro Donado’s life was characterized by unwavering commitment to his country and his personal endeavors. His legacy of dedication, courage, and positive impact will be fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

In addition to being predeceased by his parents, Reynaldo was preceded in death by his wife , Janet Theresa Donado, his son, Telesforo (Terry) Caparaz, his brothers; Victor G. Donado , Victor P. Donado , Noel Donado, Robert Donado , Lyndon Donado, Jhillian Viel Donado , Lucas Donado, James Andrew Donado, and his sister Louviminda Donado.

Reynaldo is survived by his brothers, Victor M. Donado and Hermenegildo Donado, his sister, Linda Samoy Quilang, his son Reynaldo Matro Donado Jr, his daughter Janean Neptune; his grandsons David Caparaz and Telesforo (Teles) Caparaz Jr, his granddaughters, Catherine Caparaz and Jayla Taylor,his great-grandson Ian Alley, his great-granddaughter, Ava Caparaz; and a host of many cousins and other relatives.

A visitation and funeral service will be held at Altmeyer Funeral Home, 5033 Rouse Drive, Virginia Beach, VA 23462. Reynaldo will be laid to rest at Colonial Grove Memorial, 3445 Princess Anne Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23456. A reception will be held following the burial at the Church of the Epiphany, 1530 Lafayette Blvd, Norfolk, VA 23509 where the family will conduct a Potluck.
