Leroy Frederick Matthews, 85, of Newport News

Leroy Frederick Matthews (Weymouth Funeral Home & Crematory)

Leroy Frederick Matthews, 85, died peacefully on August 7, 2024, at his home in Newport News, VA.

Leroy was the only son of Gracie Gertrude and Hodges Leroy Matthews and was born in Alberta, VA. After high school, Leroy enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served three years and obtained his education as an electronics technician that landed him his life-long career at NASA Langley Research Center. Throughout his 40+ year career, he received multiple awards with NASA awarding him the title of Engineer.

Leroy was the rock of the family, the fixer, the consultant, a Sunday School teacher for over 35 years, and a deacon in his church earning him the distinction of Life Deacon. Before and after his retirement, his family often called on him to assist with home repairs and a multitude of other tasks. He enjoyed photography, spending time with family and friends, camping with his wife and children and eventually, with his extended family, oftentimes being absent for hours as he “made friends” with the other campers.

Together with Ann, Leroy raised three children who love him wholeheartedly and are so thankful that their father was a strong Christian man with such deep family values. Though we mourn his death, we have also grieved a thousand little losses over the past several years as we watched his disease progress. He will be sorely missed.

He was predeceased by his parents; two sisters, Francine Daniel, and Velma Utley. He is survived by his wife and soulmate of 63 years, Ann Matthews; daughter, Janet Eley (Craig), son, David Matthews (Patti), and daughter, Carol Caldwell (Ken); six grandchildren, Carly Bullock, Taylor Eley, Jake Matthews, Jesse Caldwell, Jessica Harris, and Katie Caldwell and eight great- grandchildren.

The family thanks the caregivers, Shalom, Haroon, Ali, Jessika, and Toni as well as Riverside Hospice, all of whom provided compassionate care for Leroy and the family.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to First Baptist Church of Newport News.
