Edward “Ed” Lee Haurand, 61, of West Point, VA, passed away after a short, but hard-fought battle with cancer on August 4, 2024 surrounded by family. He was a lifetime resident of West Point and pillar of the community.
Ed graduated from West Point High School, worked as a sheriff’s deputy for the King William County police department, the Town of West Point, owned and operated his own home improvement company and worked for J. Saunders Construction for over 20 years.
Ed was an avid outdoorsman and sportsman spending much of his time on the water hunting, boating, water skiing, fishing, shelling, and enjoying the company of his family. He excelled in sports in his youth and poured into his community by coaching the West Point varsity boys basketball for 5 years, the West Point JV girls basketball team for 5 years, the AAU boys basketball league through New Kent County, and various sports through West Point parks and recreation.
Above all else he was a God loving, family man. He was so proud of the family he created with his beautiful wife, the accomplishments of his daughters, and took every chance he had to brag to his doctors and nurses that he put them both through nursing school. Ed’s favorite pastime was spending moments with his grandchildren. He was present for every occasion; there was nothing he missed.
Ed was a jack of all trades, a master of corny jokes, there was nothing he couldn’t fix or rig, and he would drop everything to do it for anyone in need.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Patricia Haurand, his father, David J. Haurand, and his two fathers-in-law, Thomas Sturtz and Joseph Ripchick.
Ed is survived by his wife of 40 years this October, Lynn Haurand, his two daughters Audrey Spradling (Jason) and Carlie Norkunas (Mark), his four grandchildren, Josiah, Shaelynn, Zoe, and Lena, his siblings, Beth Croswell (Marvin), Ginny Wright, Kathy Haurand, John Haurand (Tammy), Paula Wilson (Robert), Stephen Sturtz (Leslie), his mother-in-law, Carla Sturtz, and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
A memorial service will be held 4 p.m. Sunday, August 11 at The Edge Worship Center, 3178 King William Avenue, West Point, VA 23181.
