Charles Daniel “Danny” Spruill, 72, of Seaford, Va., peacefully departed this world to his heavenly home on July 26, 2024, after a brief illness.
He was surrounded by the warmth and prayers of his friends and loved ones. Danny was born on August 28, 1951, in Rocky Mount, N.C., to the late Dillard and Alie Mae Spruill. He graduated from Ferguson High School in 1969 and attended Christopher Newport College before moving to Seaford in 1976.
Professionally, he retired in September 2006 after 36 years as a civil servant with the Department of the Army at Fort Monroe.
Compassion, service and family were the keystones of Danny’s life.
It was his experiences as a youth football, baseball and softball coach in Newport News and York County that embodied his commitment to the community. Danny served as a coach and board member with the York-Seaford Bulldogs for more than 40 years. “Coach Danny” was known for his ability to encourage players and is remembered as a pioneer and leader in youth sports. He cherished the lasting friendships he made with families through those teams, keeping up with many athletes through high school and beyond. Danny’s life was also enriched by his enjoyment of many other activities, including fishing and boating, hunting, pets, gardening and spending time with family.
Danny is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Renee; children Candice (George) and Andrew; stepchildren Craig (Jenna) and Lindsay (Brad); beloved brother Dillard Ray (Christina); niece Mary Mae (Michael); and cousin Charlie (Susan). Also left to mourn are family friend Terri and her children, who Danny lovingly served as a father figure to for many years, Savannah (Zach), Anthony, Michael (Brooke), Keoni and Elena.
Danny’s legacy lives on with his 13 cherished grandchildren: Hailey, Cassidy, Cailyn, Lincoln, Talen, Annabel, Harper, Wyatt, Glenn, Roman, Hazel, Krue, Axel and grandnephew Tommie.
In remembrance, a gathering will take place at 1 p.m. on Saturday, August 3, 2024 at Seaford Baptist Church, where we will honor Danny’s enduring impact on our community and hearts.
