Michael “Mike” Robert Battaglia, 81, of Norfolk

Michael “Mike” Robert Battaglia died on Friday, May 10, 2024.

Mike was born in Norfolk, Virginia in 1942 and graduated from Norfolk Catholic High School in 1960. He attended and graduated from the Virgina Military Institute in 1964 with a degree in Civil Engineering.

Upon graduation Mike served on active duty for four years in the United States Air Force. During that time, he was stationed at Pope Air Force Base in Fayetteville, North Carolina. After completion of his active-duty commitment in 1969, Mike obtained his Professional Engineer’s license through examination while working as a civil service Civil/Structural Engineer for the Air Force.

In 1971, Mike and Mary Jo returned to Virginia when Mike joined the Engineering Directorate at Tactical Air Command, Langley Air Force Base which in 1992 transitioned to become Air Combat Command. He had various assignments on the staff to include Chief of the Facilities Branch, Chief of the Construction Division, and Chief of the Environmental Restoration Branch. Mike retired from the USAF Civil Service in 2000. He was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church for 39 years and prior to that a member of St. Jerome Catholic Church. During retirement Mike volunteered as a first-grade reading tutor in the Newport News Public School System.

Mike was predeceased by his parents, Austin Battaglia and Hilda O’Brien Battaglia, of Norfolk, Virginia and sister, Ann B. Phillips of Cape Coral, Florida.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary Jo Scullion Battaglia; daughter, Elizabeth B. Emanuel (Greg) of Arlington, Virginia; three grandchildren, Michael (Dallas, Texas), Katherine (Little Rock, Arkansas), and Caroline (Jacksonville, Florida); sister, Patricia Robertson (Carl) of Raleigh, North Carolina and brother, Anthony Battaglia (Kathleen) of Chesapeake, Virginia.

Mike had many interests. He was a self-taught swimmer from growing up in East Ocean View and also enjoyed running. He was actively involved when the Wendwood Swim Team was formed; he officiated at meets for many years. He was particularly proud to be a part of the small group that designed and built swimming blocks for the team. The blocks are still in use today over 40 years later. Mike loved his family and enjoyed being a grandpa. He could talk for hours about his three grandchildren. He loved attending their activities and events. Mike was particularly proud that all three grandchildren are engineers.

The family welcomes flowers, or a donation can be made to the American Heart Association on Mike’s behalf.

The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 16, 2024 at Weymouth Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass will be conducted at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, May 17, 2024 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church with Interment to follow in Peninsula Memorial Park.
