James “Jack” M. Hull, 92, of Newport News, VA, peacefully passed away at his home on Monday, May 22, 2023.
He was born in Rocky Mount, NC and shortly thereafter moved to Newport News, VA where he spent the remainder of his life. Jack graduated from Morrison/Warwick High School in 1948. After graduation, he spent 6 years playing professional baseball. Over the next 18 years, he played, managed, and led the Fox Hill fastpitch softball team to national prominence. He was named Peninsula’s Sports Club Man of the Year in 1974 and was also inducted into the Tidewater Hall of Fame in 1990. Jack was a designer engineer by trade. He worked for several design firms over the duration of his career including the Newport News Shipyard where he retired in 1993.
Jack was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Hull. He is survived by his daughter, Paige Snow (Tony Adkins) of Yorktown, VA.; his son, Russ Porter, III (Kitty Lambiotte) of Newport News, VA.: his grandchildren, Marci Page, Russ Porter, IV, Katie Snow, Alexandra Hoebeke, Corey Hoebeke, Meredith Justice and Michael Adkins; his great-grandchildren, Gracie Baker, Wylan Page, Zach Page, Hayden Cook, Hadleigh Wells and Mateo Canas. He was so very proud of his family and was lovingly wearing his “World’s Greatest Pop Pop” sweatshirt when he took his last breath.
Daddy, Jack, Pop Pop wanted us to share these final words…..” I have had my last base hit and put the last man out at home plate. Thank you to everyone. Now I have rounded third and I am now headed home.”
The family will receive friends from noon to 12:50 p.m., Tuesday, May 30, 2023 at Weymouth Funeral Home. A Graveside Service will take place following the visitation at 1 p.m. at Peninsula Memorial Park.
