June Marie Gerlach, 85, died on Monday, January 16, 2023 at Riverside Regional Medical Center. She was born in Neptune City, NJ and lived in Japan as a child.  She had been a Newport News resident for the past 60 years.  She worked at Old Point National Bank for 16 years before becoming a homemaker. She was very active in her children’s lives volunteering as a den mother of the Cub Scouts, a Youth Advisor of the Virginia Junior Quarter Horse Association and 4-H. Her and her husband, Bernie devoted many hours to the Knights of Columbus #5480.  She managed the kitchen during bingo games where her specialty desserts were served for over 30 years. June also provided tea and cookies for the Women of the Knights of Columbus meetings. She was always a Jersey girl at heart and loved her New Jersey hard rolls, tomatoes and Jersey submarine sandwiches. Because of her close friendship with the Rooney family, she was a true Pittsburgh Steelers fan. She loved animals, especially dogs and spent many hours watching birds at her birdfeeder.

June was preceded in death by her father, Edwards Charles Fields; her mother, Agnes Marie Maki and her stepfather, Reino Maki; her twin sister, Joan Marjorie Mitchell and her brothers, Charles and James Maki. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Bernard “Bernie” Gerlach; her children, Dale D. Thompson (Joan), Dawn Marie Rossi (Keith) and Bernardine Gerlach (Katie); her 4 grandchildren, Brent, Trevor, Dusty and Casey and her 4 great-grandchildren, Ady, Valerie, Cayden and Chloe and her brother, Frank Maki .

A Memorial Service will be held at 12:30p.m., Tuesday, January 24, 2023 at Weymouth Funeral Home by Deacon Eric Palm. Inurnment will take place at a later date at the St. Jerome Catholic Church Columbarium.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Peninsula SPCA or the Knights of Columbus Council #5480, Walter Pollard.
