Karin Elke Stephenson, 79, passed away January 6, 2023. Elke was born in Germany, and brought her love for cooking and baking German food with her when she came to the United States. She was a former owner of Deutsche Ecke for three years, and served the area with some of the best German foods. Elke was passionate about cooking and baking, but also enjoyed gardening.
Elke is predeceased by her parents Paul and Maria Vogel; daughter Heidi Schirmer; sisters Rita, Elvira, and Ute; and her brother Jurgen. She is survived by her husband of 43 years Richard Stephenson; daughters Karin Martinez (Gabriel) and Jacqueline Beasley (Blair); son Michael Christian (Jennifer); sister’s Heidi and Edith of Germany and Brothers Rainer and Peter of Germany; grandchildren Felicia Young, Gabriel Martinez, Alex Martinez, Alexandria Altarribia, Brandon Beasley, Nicholas Beasley, Alec Beasley, Jordan Christian, Jeremiah Christian, Josiah Christian, Maddie Stephenson, and Connor Stephenson; and one great grandbaby Truman Christian, And a host of nieces and nephews residing in Germany.
A visitation will be held Wednesday, January 11, from 10am to 11am at Altmeyer Funeral Home-Denbigh Chapel, 12893 Jefferson Ave. Newport News. A service will immediately follow at 11am. Burial will take place at Albert G. Horton, Jr. Veterans Cemetery Friday, January 20, at 2pm.
