Ann Cook Horton, 90, of Newport News, passed away on Sunday, November 20, 2022. Born to Joseph Howard and Addie Woods Kyles Cook, Ann grew up in Winston-Salem, NC surrounded by a large extended family. She graduated from James A. Gray High School and worked at General Electric until she married Harry H. Horton, also of Winston-Salem. Ann and Harry moved to Tidewater in 1954. From 1972-1995, Ann served as an administrative assistant for the Art and Music Departments, Newport News Public Schools, a job she enjoyed with her love of the arts. Ann and Harry were founding and lifelong members of Reformation Lutheran Church in Newport News.
In addition to her family and her church, Ann loved to dance, travel, and to play any kind of board or card game, in which she was very competitive. Until her later years at Mennowood Community, one of her favorite things was to sit on her home’s large back porch in a swing, busy working a crossword puzzle or reading books. Music was also a big part of her life; she sang in the church choir for decades, and attended many concerts, from high school bands to symphony productions. She enjoyed many theatre and musical events at the Ferguson Center for the Arts, where she served as an usher. She had a loyal group of friends dating from her earliest days in Hampton and Newport News, where she and Harry moved in 1954. Her grandchildren always clamored for “Mamaw’s ‘flokes’” of ice cream and Pepsi. Her children had to be shooed away from her cast iron skillet of fried okra in the summertime.
Ann was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Harry H. Horton. Ann is survived by her three children: Tonia Woods Horton of Santa Fe, NM, Mikki Lubertazzi (Danny) of Newport News, and Tim Horton (Lisa) of Richmond; five grandsons, Dustin (Lee-Wilson) and Christian Lubertazzi, Trey, Joseph, and Noah Horton and 2 great-grandchildren, Sydney and Charles Lubertazzi.
Pallbearers will be her five grandsons, son-in-law Danny, and honorary pallbearer, son, Tim.
