James R. Collins Sr., 98, of Englewood, New Jersey

James Collins Sr. (Whiting’s Funeral Home)

James R. Collins Sr. passed away peacefully at home on Monday, October 3, 2022. He was born on May 4, 1924, to the late Lucille Peck and Kenneth Bell, in Indianapolis, Indiana.

James enlisted in the United States Navy and honorably served his country.  After being discharged from the Navy, he moved to New York and later made Englewood, NJ his permanent home. He retired from General Motors and later drove for Black and White Cab Co. and a school bus for handicapped kids.

While living in New York, James met the love of his life, the former Marie Reed Watson, at her uncle’s concession stand.  On March 29, 1971, they were united in holy matrimony.

His favorite hobbies were bowling. He joined a bowling league and won several trophies. He also enjoyed playing solitaire on the computer for hours, crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, and connect four. His favorite eating places were KFC and the Englewood Diner.  He also enjoyed IHOP and his ice-cold Pepsi.

James was also preceded in death by his son, James R. “Snookie” Collins Jr.; four grandchildren

He leaves to cherish his fond memories with his two daughters, Vennisha Anderson of Virginia and Jean Gabriel of Texas; grandchildren, Chantel Anderson, Channa Anderson, Tynai’ Barnes, Saraye Cuffee, Karleigh Anderson, Kenneth Anderson, Michelle Collins, Goldie Gabriel Johnson (Michael), Michael Beau Johnson, Kimberly Ballou Johnson, Amonee Haley (Sydney Haley), Angela Stewart (Aaron), and Lillian Gabriel; great-grandchildren, Aaron Stewart Jr., Gabrielle Sumpter, Azarel Haley, McKinley Haley, Xander Haley, and Titan Haley; daughter-in-law, Sylvia Collins; and a host of other loving relatives and friends.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, October 13, 2022, at Whiting’s Funeral Home.  Livestream will be available at the beginning of the service. Mr. Collins may be viewed on Thursday beginning at 10:00 a.m. until the hour of his service in the funeral home.
