John Phillip Gaines, Sr, (aka Phil & JP) 78 of King William, Virginia, transitioned from this life to his heavenly home peacefully surrounded by his family in the comfort of his home on Thursday, September 15, 2022.
“Phil” was born February 11, 1944, in King William, Virginia to the late Bennie and Carrie Gaines. He attended King William Public School. He worked for Richfood for 20 years. After retirement, started his own business and became a logger for Chesapeake in West Point. Phil also owned “The Dirt Road Dusters,” a baseball team he managed and enjoyed playing with for several years.
Phil married the love of his life, the late Geraldine Marian Gaines in 1965, and in this union, there were seven children born. Phil was saved at an early age and rededicated his life back to the Lord when he became a member of Union Hope Baptist church. Phil was a devoted and dedicated servant of the Lord and a beloved church member in his church until his illness. He was faithful to his callings while at Union Hope (sexton, choir member, and Treasurer). Phil touched many lives, and he will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Phil is preceded in death by his parents: Brother: Bennie, Sisters: Shirley, Doris, Elsie, and Mary.
Phil leaves to cherish his life and memories to his children: John Jr., (Geneva) Gaines, of Richmond, VA. Clifton Gaines, Sr., of West Point, Va. Jearl (Antonio) Walker, Sr., of Providence Forge, VA. Chris (Tenna) Gaines, of King William, VA. Michael Gaines, of King William, VA. Phyllis Gaines, of Williamsburg, VA., and Bonita (Tony)Martin, of King William, VA. Mother-in-law, Bessie Quarles of King William, VA. Grandchildren (15), Great-grandchildren (20) a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins, Union Hope Baptist Church in King William, VA, and Bethel Restoration Center (his church away from home) in Williamsburg, VA who welcomed him with love and open arms and many friends.
A funeral service will be held 11AM Saturday, September 24, 2022 at Bethel Restoration Center, 6205 Richmond Rd, Williamsburg, VA 23188. A viewing will be from 5PM – 7PM Friday, September 23, 2022 at Vincent Funeral Home, 417 11th St., West Point, VA 23181. Interment will be private
