Mable Irene Pittman Wallace was reunited with her beloved Ed on July 12, 2022 at the age of 98. Born, in Kenly, NC., Irene grew up on a farm with her brothers and sisters. Irene and Ed met at Cash Corner in Kenly, and it was love at first sight. At the outbreak of WWII Ed enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps. While he was in flight school, he mailed a letter to Irene proposing marriage and included a ring. Ed, a B17 Flying Fortress pilot, was shot down on his 15th mission and spent the remainder of the war as a POW. Returning from his service, Ed and Irene were married on July 7, 1945 and remained together and in love until Ed died in November, 2013.
With the birth of her sons, Billy and Bobby, Irene left the workforce to raise the two boys, returning to work only when both boys were in high school. She held varying jobs in the insurance industry, retiring as office manager for Interstate Life in Newport News. Ed and Irene traveled extensively, visiting every state and going on several cruises. They loved square dancing and ballroom dancing.
Irene lived independently after Ed’s passing, enjoying good health and many friends, but moved into Billy’s home at the onset of the pandemic.
Irene was predeceased by her parents, Fletcher and Gertrude Pittman; her brothers, H. A. Pittman, Tom Pittman, Bill Pittman, and Mac Pittman and her sisters, Gertie Buchanan, Jenny Hinnant, and Ruth Langston.
