HISTORIC TRIANGLE — Guthrie William Sawyer, 97, lived a long adventurous life which ended on October 7, 2021 at Riverside Hospital. Born in Lynn, Arkansas to Robert and Effie Smith Sawyer. He relocated to Virginia and went to work for Southern Materials in his late 20’s retiring with 40+ years of service as a heavy equipment operator/concrete – Jack of all trades, he enjoyed every day. Guthrie had nothing but good to say about the owner, Mr. Hoffhimer.
Guthrie was involved in Southern Gospel Music for over 70 years. He sung with quartets in the early years, then started promoting groups all over the U.S. He truly enjoyed bringing groups in for his all night sings and continued until well into his 90’s. He was truly loved and will be missed.
His favorite saying was, I might be a Baptist but I’m about to have a Pentecostal shout. WELL GLORY!
Guthrie was predeceased by his wife, Corrine; parents, Robert and Effie Sawyer; son, Jimmy; brothers, Paul, Lee H, Levon, Charles and sister, Mary Lewis.
