Mother Ethel Doreatha Hutchins, 81, of Virginia Beach, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Thursday, April 16, 2020.
Mother Hutchins was born July 17, 1938, in Silverdale, North Carolina, to the late Roy and Jannie Bryant. She was educated in the Silverdale Public School System. After graduation, as a young woman, she moved to Kinston, North Carolina, to further her career. While there, she met and married the late Willie J. Hutchins. From their union, they gave birth to three children. Mother Hutchins also worked 30 years for the Hampton Shirt Company.
About 20 years ago, Mother Hutchins relocated to Virginia to live with her oldest daughter, Denise Patrick. Mother Hutchins loved the Lord and was a longtime member of New Jerusalem COGIC in Virginia Beach under the leadership of the late Bishop Barnett K. Thoroughgood, who consecrated her as a mother on the Mother’s Board. She was also a member of the Mother’s Noonday Prayer Band. Mother Hutchins truly loved her family, but she also loved reading the Bible, cooking, baking, cleaning and singing old-time songs of Zion.
In addition to her parents, Mother Hutchins was preceded in death by her sons, Calvin and Willie Jr. Hutchins; sister, Hattie Perry, and brothers, Burzell, Edward and Earl Bryant.
She leaves to cherish her memory her children, Denise Patrick (Roderick) of Virginia Beach, and Gloria Jackson of Stamford, Connecticut; granddaughter, Lauren Patrick of Stamford, Connecticut; dear friend, Sister Edna Plummer of Virginia Beach; Shirley Dixon of Kinston, North Carolina; the New Jerusalem COGIC Mother’s Board; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
