Laurel Hortense White Wilson, 93, enjoyed sailing with her husband as his first mate

Laurel Hortense White Wilson, 93, passed away Wednesday, July 11, 2018. She was born Jan. 13, 1925, in Virginia Beach to the late Addie Cason White and Marshall S. White.

She attended Oceana High School and later took night classes at Kee Business College. She was a stock analyst at the Naval Supply Center and at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Portsmouth, retiring after 20 years of service.

She attended the Methodist Church in her early years and later joined the Our Saviours Lutheran Church in Baylake Pines. She was a member of the Retired Officers Wives Society and several conservation charities. She, along with her husband, were members of the Broad Bay Sailing Club in former years. She enjoyed nature, especially bird watching and sailing with her husband on their yacht as his first mate. She also enjoyed traveling, with her husband to many foreign countries.

She was preceded in death by her husband, retired U.S. Navy Capt. Robert H. Wilson; and sisters, Alethia Harmon, Madora Berry and Marguerite Howard.

She is survived by her son, Gary L. Wilson; three stepchildren, Beverly Rooker, Robert Alan Wilson and Gary R. Wilson; sister, Sibyl Merkle; and many nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at noon, Monday, July 16, at Rosewood Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Virginia Beach Volunteer Rescue Squad.
