Margaret Ellis was born November 11, 1914, in Alamance County, N.C., the third of seven surviving children of Sirenus Lofton Dixon and Annie Fowler Dixon.

She outlived the whole bunch, losing her favorite sister, Edna Sandri, two years ago.

Margaret was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Macon Carmichael Ellis Jr., and her daughter, Carolyn Ellis Rhoads. She is mourned by her daughter, Mary Ann Ellis Newton; grandchildren, Ashley Heald, Katherine Rhoads and Sterling Rhoads; and her great-grandchildren, Webster Rhoads and Adele Rhoads.

Margaret was a creative individual who left a lifetime of visual arts’ creations, most of which were practical works, from garments to rugs. She worked as a registered nurse and later as a volunteer nurse. She was active in the community, from Girl Scouts to bridge club. She was a voracious reader and suffered from undiagnosed depression most of her life.

Margaret was a master at reading body language. She was a true friend to those in her circle and would do anything for them until her mind and body failed. She loved her grandchildren and played an important role in their upbringing. She loved her dog, Ladybug, and adored whichever cat was currently in residence. She had a wicked sense of humor that could catch you by surprise.

She was a colorful woman with a powerful spirit and will to survive. She will be missed.

A small celebration of life will be held at her home in Yorktown at 1 p.m. February 28.

Please leave online condolences for the family at Amory Funeral Home.
