W&M Lax Falls to No. 15 Stony Brook

WILLIAMSBURG — The William & Mary lacrosse team fell to No. 15 Stony Brook, 21-8, at Martin Family Stadium on Thursday evening.

The contest was knotted at 2-2 midway through the first quarter following goals by Paige Gilbert and Ainsley Huizenga, but SBU (12-2, 6-0) closed the half with 12 unanswered scores.

The Tribe (4-10, 0-5) opened the second half with back-to-back goals by Gilbert and Kate Draddy to cut the margin to 14-4, but the Seawolves responded with a 4-0 run.

W&M outscored SBU, 4-3, during the fourth quarter but was unable to get any closer than the final margin.

Tribe Standouts
Gilbert led W&M with two goals and three draw controls, while Draddy added two points (1g, 1a), three draw controls and two caused turnovers.

Charlotte Troy found the back of the cage twice for the first goals of her collegiate career.

Inside the Numbers
Stony Brook outshot W&M, 45-13, which included a 35-12 margin on goal.

SBU also owned advantages in draw controls (18-12) and ground balls (22-9) while it committed 11 fewer turnovers (8-19).

The Opposition
Ellis Masera led the Seawolves with six points (3g, 3a) and eight draw controls, while Alex Finn registered five goals.

Charlotte Verhulst also came up big with four assists and five draw controls.

Draddy moved into fourth place on W&M’s single-season list for draw controls (58) … The contest was the Tribe’s fourth game versus a top-20 opponent this season.
