W&M Men’s Tennis Notches CAA Win over Drexel

WILLIAMSBURG — William & Mary won for the second time in as many days, this time in CAA play, downing Drexel, 6-1, on Sunday afternoon.

After sweeping doubles, the Tribe (7-6, 1-2 CAA) received singles wins from graduate students Alexandre Leblanc (No. 1), Satchel Benn (No. 2), and Bill Duo (No. 6), sophomore Albert Hansen (No. 5), and freshman Oliver Hague (No. 4) to pick up its first CAA victory of the year.

How It Happened

  • W&M swept the doubles positions to take the initial point of the match from Drexel (8-4, 1-1 CAA). It marked the seventh time this season that the Tribe captured the doubles point.
  • The Tribe won at the top two posts to clinch the point. At the top spot, Duo and graduate student Konstantinos Raptis topped Drexel’s Alan Jesudason and Alex De Sousa, 6-2, to improve to 7-3 on the year.
  • Benn and Hague won their sixth-straight match in clinching the doubles point with a 6-3 win over Alessio Azzalini and Egor Kirakosov on line two. The Tribe duo improved to 7-4 at No. 2.
  • Leblanc and junior Alexander Karman rounded out the sweep, winning in a tiebreaker over Will Burridge and Hussein El Tawil at No. 3. It marked the Tribe pair’s second win in as many days.
  • Hansen pushed the Tribe lead to 2-0 with his third-straight win at No. 5. The Tribe sophomore won a competitive opening set, 6-4, before blanking Drexel’s Alessio Azzalini in the second, 6-0. Hansen won his 11th match overall and improved to 6-3 in dual-match play with five wins at No. 5.
  • Leblanc brought the Tribe within one point of the team triumph, winning at No. 1. He topped All-CAA First Teamer Alan Jesudason, 6-2, 6-4. He ran his singles ledger to 14-7, including a 6-5 mark at the top spot.
  • For the second-straight day, Duo clinched the Tribe victory with a triumph at No. 6. He bounced Josue Guzman by matching 6-3 scores in both sets for his fifth win in a row. He upped his mark to 9-2 overall and 4-0 in dual-match play.
  • Benn and Hague rounded out the Tribe win with victories at No. 2 and No. 4, respectively. Benn picked up his 13th win of the year, downing Alex De Sousa, 6-4, 7-5, on line two, while Hague need three sets, but upended Will Burridge, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. Hague won his team-leading 17th match and improved to 8-3 at No. 4. Benn is now 5-3 at No. 2.

The Tribe travels to Wilmington, N.C., for a trio of matches next week. W&M takes on Wichita State on Thursday, March 14, at 3:30 p.m., before facing New Mexico on Saturday, March 16, at noon. The Green and Gold closes out the trip with a CAA match against UNCW on Sunday, March 17, at noon.
