W&M Lax Falls to No. 9 Maryland, 20-5

WILLIAMSBURG — The William & Mary lacrosse team fell to No. 9 Maryland, 20-5, at Martin Family Stadium on a rainy Wednesday evening.

W&M got on the scoreboard first with a goal by Ainsley Huizenga and trailed by just two, 4-2, when Paige Gilbert found the back of the cage midway through the first quarter.

However, Maryland rattled off a 12-1 run to build a 16-3 advantage midway through the third quarter.

The Tribe got a pair of second half goals by Jaylin Locke and Justyce Barber but was unable to narrow the margin to single digits during the remainder of the contest.

Tribe Standouts
Gilbert led W&M with team highs in goals (2) and draw controls (5), while Locke posted a team-best three caused turnovers to go with her score.

Kate Draddy also provided significant production with four draw controls, three ground balls and an assist.

Freshman goalie Josie Sinwell made her collegiate debut and posted four saves and a .444 save percentage in 24:58 minutes of action.

Inside the Numbers
Maryland outshot W&M, 35-14, which included a 28-11 margin in attempts on goal.

The Terps also owned advantages in draw controls (19-10) and ground balls (21-12), while they committed four fewer turnovers (15-19).

The Opposition
Hannah Leubecker led UM with five points on three goals and two assists, while Chrissy Thomas also posted five points (1g, 4a) and Maggie Weisman finished with a hat trick.

Meghan Ball (8 DC) and Shaylan Ahearn (2g, 6 DC) combined for 14 of the Terps’ 19 draw controls.

Maryland now controls the all-time series, 31-6, and has won the last 24 meetings … The contest was the second of four games on W&M’s schedule versus nationally ranked opponents … The game was the second of four consecutive home contests for the Tribe.
