Christopher Newport Set to Host 2024 Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Championship

NEWPORT NEWS — The Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Championship Tournament will begin on Thursday at the Freeman Center as Christopher Newport University prepares to host the 2024 version of the postseason event over the next three days.

The quarterfinal round will be played at 5 and 7:30 on Thursday evening followed by the semifinals on Friday night at the same time. The champion of the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference will then be crowned in Newport News on Saturday, February 24 at 7 p.m.

The fourth-ranked Christopher Newport Captains (24-1) are the top seed in this week’s event and Mary Washington (15-8) secured the #2 seed — both will earn first-round byes and advance to Friday’s semifinal round. On Thursday, the action will begin with #4 seed Salisbury (8-16) facing #5 seed Mount Mary (12-11) at 5 p.m. Immediately following, #3 UC Santa Cruz (9-14) takes on #6 Warren Wilson (1-24) at 7:30 p.m.

The winner of the first quarterfinal game will advance to face the Captains and the winner of the nightcap will take on Mary Washington in Friday’s second semifinal.

Tickets are on sale now. Prices are $10 for chairback and $5 for general admission; CNU students will be Free with their student ID. Christopher Newport is the four-time defending champion of the conference and have won five of the last six. This is the first time the Captains have hosted the postseason tournament since clinching the Capital Athletic Conference championship at home in 2020 against York (Pa.).

CNU enters the tournament riding a 12-game winning streak overall. Three Captains were named All-Conference on Wednesday in first team All-League pick Hannah Kaloi and second team All-League selections Alivia Giles and Camille Malagar. Kaloi is averaging 11.7 points per game while Giles is adding 11.5 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. Malagar is knocking down 49.7 percent of her shots to lead the backcourt with 23 games started this season.
