Tribe Women’s Tennis Falls at West Virginia

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Junior Hedda Gurholt won at the top singles position, but William & Mary suffered a 4-1 setback to West Virginia on Sunday afternoon at the Summit Tennis Academy.

How It Happened
– Freshman Francesca Davis and sophomore Yaelle Vaissaud won at the No. 3 doubles position, but the Mountaineers took the match’s initial point with victories at the top two spots.
– Davis and Vaissaud upended Love-Star Alexis and Ting-Pei Chang, 6-2, on line three. The Tribe (3-3) tandem is now 3-1 in dual-match action.
– After a WVU win at No. 3, Gurholt got W&M on the board with her eighth-straight singles win. The reigning CAA Player of the Year topped Love-Star Alexis, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 1 to draw the Tribe within 2-1. Gurholt improved to 14-2 overall and 5-0 in dual-match action.
– Freshman Francesca Davis jumped out to a set advantage at No. 5, while graduate student Yu Chen rallied to force a third set at No. 2. Their matches were abandoned when the team result was decided.
– The Mountaineers (9-1) put the finishing touches on their fourth-straight win behind straight-set victories at No. 4 and No. 6.

Up Next
The Tribe returns to the state of Virginia for two matches next week. W&M travels to former league rival VCU on Friday, Feb. 23, at 2 p.m., before hosting George Mason on Sunday, Feb. 25, at 1 p.m.
