WILLIAMSBURG — Junior Hedda Gurholt picked up her first career nationally-ranked win on Saturday afternoon at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center. Maryland, though, rallied to pull out a close 4-3 match over the Tribe, winning four of the six singles matches.

Gurholt knocked off No. 79-ranked Selma Cadar in straight-sets at No. 2, while freshman Francesca Davis claimed a victory at No. 6. Maryland’s Maria Budin won in three sets at No. 4 to give the Terps the team victory.

How It Happened

  • The Tribe (2-1) captured the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3.
  • Davis and sophomore Yaelle Vaissaud won on line three by a 6-2 scoreline over Ela Platenikova and Aida Eissa at No. 3. The Tribe pair picked up their first win.
  • The sophomore tandem of Ine Stange and Gurholt clinched the initial point of the match behind a 6-3 victory over Selma Cadar and Diya Challa at No. 2. They are 3-1 overall and 2-0 at No. 2 in dual-match play.
  • Davis extended the Tribe lead 2-0 with a straight-sets win at No. 6. The Tribe rookie dropped just three games in a convincing win over Platenikova, 6-3, 6-0. It was Davis’s fourth-straight win as she improved to 3-0 in dual-match play.
  • After a Maryland (4-3) victory at No. 3, Gurholt gave the Tribe a 3-1 cushion in a nationally win over Selma Cadar at No. 2. The Tribe junior downed the No. 79-ranked player in the country in straight-sets, 6-2, 7-5, for her sixth win in a row. Gurholt improved to 11-2 overall and 3-0 in dual-match play.
  • The Terrapins notched wins at No. 1 and No. 5 to pull even at three and the team result came down to a three-set tilt at No. 4.
  • After dropping the first set to Maria Budin, 7-5, Stange rallied to force a decisive third with a 6-3 victory in the second. Stange jumped out to a 4-2 lead in the final set, before Budin ripped off three-straight points to take a 5-4 lead. Stange forced a tiebreaker, but the Terps graduate student outlasted the Tribe junior in the breaker, 7-6 (1).
