VIRGINIA BEACH — The Virginia Peninsula Community College women’s volleyball team fell to 0-3 with two losses in a tri-match Sept. 9 at Bryant & Stratton College in Virginia Beach.

In the first match, the Gators lost to Pitt Community College of Winterville, N.C., 25-9, 25-12 and 25-15. They then fell to the hosts 25-6, 25-10, 25-13.

“That was a hard weekend for a brand-new team. Both of those teams are super, super strong,” said VPCC coach Tommy Thomas.

For the two matches, Fenix Camarillo totaled seven kills and eight digs; Mylo DeSue had 12 assists; Sydney Wallace had 10 digs; and Kenna Scott had five digs.

“We played all right,” Thomas said. “Hitting killed us this time. The Thursday match (a loss to Mid-Atlantic Christian), it was serving.”

Thomas said he sees progress in the second-year program.

“It’s getting there, but it’s hard,” he said. “We never gave up. We fought hard. They just have more athletes than we have right now.”

The Gators’ next match is Oct. 19 at Cheney University. The New South Athletic Conference tournament is scheduled for Nov. 5 at Heritage High School. The team will not be participating in the James Madison University club invitation Nov. 4, as previously announced.
