Bruton’s Clara Wincheski and David Danek took home individual state titles during the Group 2A State Outdoor Track and Field championships held over the weekend at Radford University.

Wincheski, a sophomore, placed first in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 11:12.57, which bested second-place Willa King of Maggie Walker who posted a time of 11:44.65. Wincheski, who also won a state title in the 3,200-meter run during the indoor season, also earned a second-place finish in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 5:27.10.

“She ran a really strong race from start to finish,” Bruton Head Coach Mark Tompkins said of Wincheski. “It was fun to watch her run a solid race and win. She’s a good girl.”

Danek earned his first state title in the high jump with a personal-best height of six feet and seven inches. His previous best jump was six feet and five inches earlier this year. With the jump, Danek finished the season tied as the eighth-best high jumper in the state this season.

“He really had a great performance,” Tompkins said of Danek. “I was almost surprised at how well he did. It’s a big difference from six-five to six-seven.”

Other Bruton athletes had solid showings during the state meet, as the Panthers tied for third overall in the boys competition and finished tied for 11th in the girls competition.

In the boys competition, Isaiah Gist earned a third-place finish in the 400-meter dash with a personal record of 50.13. Teammate Felix Amon took fourth in the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 15.55.

The boys 4×100-meter relay team or Gist, Tyler Sakimura, Dan’valique Taylor and Daniel Jones finished fourth with a time of 44.32. Another Bruton relay team, the boys 4×400-meter relay team of Gist, Shenier Johnson, Kevin Mahoney and Sakimura, also took fourth in a time of 3:31.77
