The Tabb Tigers, led by Tamia Smith’s game-high 16 points, upended the previously unbeaten Warhill Lions 59-48 at home Monday.
“I don’t think a lot of people expected much from us,” Tabb head coach Jason Clarke said. “Warhill is a very good team, so I feel very good beating them.”
The game plan was clear for the Tigers from the opening tip — pressure Warhill’s shooters early and often. Within the opening minute of the game, the Tabb (4-3, 3-2) defense forced two steals by applying full-court pressure.
With the Lions struggling to handle the Tabb tempo on both ends of the court, Smith was able to find open looks on offense, including back-to-back 3-pointers to open the second quarter.
“As a point guard, I like to give out to everybody but I also like to contribute,” Smith said. “People were passing it to me and my open shots weren’t missing.”
Despite trailing early, the Lions maintained their composure and cut Tabb’s lead to 33-31 with 5:05 left in the third quarter. Five consecutive points by Brianna Harper helped Tabb maintain its lead heading into the final quarter.
Micaela Macfarlane and Madison Clemons, who finished with 11 and 10 points, respectively, each added key buckets in the fourth quarter to help Tabb secure the upset victory.
“We did a lot of things we’ve got to work on,” Warhill head coach Bingo Brungot said. “We’ve played against pressure already this year and we were very flat tonight. I don’t know what caused the flatness, but we’ll figure it out.”
Kasey Grainer led the Lions in scoring with 13 points, while Kieran McClure added 11.

Grafton Overcomes Injuries to Easily Defeat York
In the absence of point guard threats Robyon Smith and Christa Hall, both of whom are out due to injury, Hayley Marshall gave Grafton a spark at the point guard position during a rout of York (1-4, 1-4 Bay Rivers District).
Marshall, who normally plays shooting guard for the Clippers, stepped in and led all scorers with 23 points.
“We were adjusting to not having two of our best players out there,” Grafton (5-2, 4-1) head coach Tommy Bayse said. “She stepped it up and she led us.”
After starting flat in the first quarter, Grafton found its rhythm with Marshall at the helm and cruised to an easy victory.
Haley Cunningham helped bolster the Grafton offense with 16 points.

Calloway’s 18 Leads Bruton Past Struggling Jamestown
Freshman Gabby Calloway scored 18 points to help Bruton cruise past Jamestown.
“She’s capable of giving 10-plus points a game,” Bruton head coach Terrence Green said. “She does all the dirty work down low and she actually did a good job of containing [Jamiyah] Johnson.
Green said the Bruton (2-3, 2-3 Bay Rivers District) game plan centered around containing Johnson, Jamestown’s best scoring threat. Johnson led all scorers with 22 points, but the rest of the Jamestown (1-4, 1-4) team added a mere 12 points.

Lafayette Suffers First Bay Rivers Loss
Lafayette (5-2, 5-1) dropped its first Bay Rivers District game of the season at the hands of Poquoson (4-2, 3-2).
To add insult to injury, Lafayette’s leading scorer Rachel Lia, who scored 20 points in the loss, left the game due to injury in the fourth quarter.
Lafayette head coach Chris Brown said Lia does not have a concussion, but will be evaluated further. There is no timetable for her return.
“Lia went down in the fourth quarter and without her we couldn’t score,” Brown said.
Lafayette struggled to find an offensive rhythm, especially in the second half when Poquoson outscored Lafayette 43-26.
Jill Curtis finished the game with 10 points for Lafayette.
