TOWSON, Md. — William & Mary junior Pyper Friedman scored twice for the second time in three games as the Tribe opened CAA play with a 3-2 win at Towson on Friday afternoon.
Friedman scored in the opening quarter and added the game-winner in the third, while graduate student Lauren Curran tallied her 24th career goal in the second period. She is just two shy of the program’s all-time top 15.
The Tribe put on early pressure that eventually resulted in a goal eight minutes into the contest. The Tribe had two shots off a penalty corner in the opening two minutes with the second resulting in a penalty stroke. Graduate student Audrey Domovich’s had her stroked stopped by Towson goalkeeper Tessa Scheenstra.
Friedman broke through for the Tribe, scoring for the third time in the last three matches. Junior Sara Bartzen found Friedman wide-open in the middle of the circle, and the junior midfielder beat the Towson goalkeeper to the near post.
Curran doubled the lead in the second quarter less the five minutes before the break. Graduate student Lonica McKinney flipped a bouncing centering pass to the left side of the area where Curran ripped the shot inside the near post for W&M’s second goal on the afternoon. It was McKinney’s first point as a member of the Tribe.
Towson pulled one back just seven minutes into the second half. After the Tigers stopped a Tribe corner attempt, Sarah Hatfield got a breakaway chance and converted her fifth goal of the season.
The Tribe pushed the lead back to two off a penalty corner with just over three minutes left in the third quarter. Friedman lifted a shot over the grounded Towson goalkeeper from in close on the left side for her second goal of the game. Friedman leads the Tribe with four goals this season.
The home team drew back within one, 3-2, with six minutes remaining. Madisyn Howard’s pass off a free hit found Gianna Antone and she scored into the left-side boards to close the gap.
The Tribe outshot Towson, 17-10, for the game, including a 12-6 cushion in chances on goal. Senior goalkeeper Maddie George totaled four saves in cage, including a big stop to keep the Tribe on top in the 58th minute off an Antone shot. Scheenstra notched seven saves on the other side and the Tiger defense posted a pair of defensive saves.
