UPDATE: New Traffic Pattern on I-64 East at HRBT Begins Tonight

(VDOT)

UPDATE — Motorists traveling from Hampton to Norfolk can expect a permanent lane shift onto the new North Trestle at the HRBT for traffic headed east along Interstate 64 beginning this evening.

Traffic will be diverted onto the newly constructed eastbound trestle at the Hampton shoreline, VDOT said. The new bridge will then feed motorists back into the existing eastbound tunnel.

The shift allows crews to begin demolishing the existing eastbound trestle and make way for continued project expansion while minimizing impacts to traffic, according to VDOT.

HAMPTON — Motorists traveling on Interstate 64 heading east toward Norfolk should expect a new traffic pattern at the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel to begin as early as Wednesday, May 1, according to VDOT.

Both eastbound lanes will be permanently diverted to the right at Hampton shoreline and onto the newly constructed eastbound trestle, also known as North Trestle, VDOT said.

Following last week’s boring machine breakout at the HRBT North Island, the upcoming shift is the next milestone toward increasing safety, easing congestion and improving emergency evacuation readiness in Hampton Roads, VDOT said. This shift will allow crews to begin demolishing the existing I-64 East marine (North) trestle.

Westbound traffic will not be impacted.

VDOT noted all construction schedules are subject to change due to impending weather or other unexpected circumstances. Construction updates and lane closure alerts can be found at HRBTexpansion.org.

Drivers and pedestrians are also reminded to use caution when traveling near work zones, and before hitting the road, consider using VDOT’s free 511 Virginia traffic tools or the free 511-integrated Waze GPS app to check for the most up-to-date road and travel conditions.

VDOT notes both its  511Virginia.org website  and mobile app  also offer information about construction, traffic, incidents, and congestion, as well as access to traffic cameras, weather-related impacts and more.
