WILLIAMSBURG — William & Mary has announced that registration is now open for the 2023 NATO Youth Summit, “NextGen Freedom & Security,” to be held on June 5.
The day will begin at The North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s (NATO’s) headquarters city of Brussels, Belgium before switching to Washington, D.C., for the U.S. portion, hosted by William & Mary. At the summit, young people from Europe, North America and beyond will join a free transatlantic conversation occurring both in-person and remotely.
“William & Mary students are counted among the brightest and most solutions-oriented young people in the world,” said W&M Provost Peggy Agouris. “I have no doubt that they will make good use of the day, working with other equally talented young people, making new connections and brainstorming provocative new ideas. I urge them to take advantage of the event, and to promote it to their friends this summer.”
Organized by NATO and William & Mary, the event will provide young participants with the opportunity to engage, build links, enhance understanding, exchange views and explore how NATO addresses challenges that the young generation sees as critical to their security. William & Mary said the issues covered will range from disinformation to the latest technologies, and from climate change to national defense.
The summit is primarily a free and remote event for the participants engaging in all of the activities after registering. The day will also be streamed online in multiple places, including William & Mary’s YouTube channel. In-person participation is by invitation, but NATO has launched an online competition for some available seats in both cities.
The D.C. segment of the day, held at the National Press Club, is being organized by William & Mary with support from the university’s president and provost offices.
William & Mary notes that support for the 2023 NATO Youth Summit aligns with the four focus areas of the university’s strategic plan, Vision 2026 — namely initiatives dealing with data use and data fluency, the importance of water resources and resiliency, democratic principles and sustainability, and careers of impact and success.
