Deadline Approaching to Apply for Winter Energy Assistance

STATEWIDE — The Virginia Department of Social Services wants to remind Virginia residents that the deadline for its winter fuel assistance program is fast approaching.

The deadline for Virginia residents who wish to apply for the program is Fri., Nov. 12.

The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is a program offered to residents who meet a certain income to household size ratio and/or participate or have family members who receive other benefit programs including Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Social Security Income (SSI), and Temporary Cash Assistance for Families with Minor Children (TANF).

According to the website for the Virginia Department of Social Services (VDSS), households must have a heating or cooling expense and gross monthly income may not exceed 150 percent of the federal poverty level.

A Facebook post from James City County notes that this assistance can be used towards late charges, connection fees, and restarting a furnace.
