NEWPORT NEWS — A Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT)/Safety Service Patrol (SSP) vehicle was struck by a car on Interstate 64 (I-64) in Newport News on Thursday.
On the morning of Thursday, Sept. 23, Virginia State Police (VSP) was completing a crash investigation on I-64 at Route 143/Jefferson Avenue.
In a Sept. 24 release from Sgt. Michelle Anaya of VSP, it is stated that a VDOT/SSP was behind an VSP vehicle during this crash investigation. Both vehicles had emergency lights turned on, along with the working arrow board flashing on the SPP truck.
At that time, 22-year-old Victor M. Hernandez Castro, the driver of a 2020 Honda Civic, was traveling east on I-64 at a high rate of speed when he lost control of the vehicle, ran off the roadway and struck the SSP truck from behind, pushing both vehicles into the jersey wall.
Castro and his male passenger were both transported to Riverside Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The driver of the SSP truck was also transported with non-life threatening injuries.
The crash is still under investigation and charges are pending.
