UPDATE (August 9, 2021): Suzanne Clavet, director of news and media for William & Mary, has notified WYDaily that the school will require face masks/coverings in indoor spaces. Below is a statement provided by Ms. Clavet:
William & Mary will be predominantly in person this fall. With that in mind, and given new CDC guidance regarding the delta variant, we are temporarily reinstating a requirement for masks to be worn indoors in public shared spaces on our campus. This is for all students, faculty, staff and visitors. As the university looks forward to the start of the fall semester, the health and wellness of our students, faculty and staff remain our highest priority.
HAMPTON ROADS — As most colleges and universities look to start the fall semester towards the end of this month, all of them have released new guidance regarding COVID-19 vaccination requirements for faculty, staff and students.
Christopher Newport University
In the spring, Christopher Newport University put out a policy that it would require all students to be vaccinated in order to enroll for the 2021 fall semester.
According to the school’s Chief Communications Officer, Jim Hanchett, the school will be opening on time with approximately 90 percent of their student body already vaccinated or having obtained an medical or religious exemption.
All those who are exempt will be tested for COVID on a weekly basis and be expected to wear a mask and maintain social distancing where appropriate.
College of William & Mary
Back in May of 2021, William & Mary issued policies that requires all faculty, staff and students to be vaccinated unless there they have an express medical or religious exemption, according to the college’s website.
All members of the Tribe must have their first dose no later than Aug. 10 and their final dose on or before Sept. 17.
The school said it will assist international students who do not have access to the vaccine in their home countries once they arrive for the semester. Those who are not fully vaccinated at the start of the term will be required to undergo routine testing as a condition of their being able to attend in-person activities on campus.
Students who are not exempt from getting vaccinated will be able to disenroll from classes.
Hampton University
In a letter to new students enrolled in the 2021 summer and fall terms, Dr. Barbara Inman, vice president for administrative services at Hampton University (HU) and chair for the university’s Infectious Disease and Prevention Working Group, all students will be required to be vaccinated prior to returning to campus.
The letter, dated March 8, went on to say “The University requires vaccinations like meningitis and varicella, etc. so requiring the COVID-19 vaccination is in concert with prior procedures to keep students, faculty, staff as well as the community, safe.”
Thomas Nelson Community College
According to a 35-page “Return to Campus” plan released by the college in June, both Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) campuses strongly encourage its students, faculty and staff to get vaccinated but it will not require it with a few exceptions.
Those in the nursing education program maybe be required to be vaccinated in order to participate in clinical internships.
