NEWPORT NEWS — On Friday, July 2, 2021, Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab) will conduct a test of its tornado warning siren.
At 10:30 a.m., the siren will be tested for a period that could last for up to three minutes. The sound will be a wavering tone (also called “high-low-high” or 10-4-10). Residents living or traveling within a 1.5-mile radius of the lab may be able to hear the siren, dependent upon weather conditions.
The siren, which is tested monthly, is used to alert those who are outdoors on JLab’s campus to take cover in the event of tornadoes or of tornado warnings that are within the immediate vicinity of the lab.
