Crash on I-64 Overturns Truck, Driver Flees

HAMPTON — A crash that occurred during morning rush hour on Tuesday, June 15 resulted in an overturned truck and one of the drivers fleeing the scene.

At approximately 6:58 a.m., a Hyundai Sonata was traveling at a high rate of speed on I-64 westbound east of King Street, mile marker 268.

The driver swerved to make a lane change around another vehicle, lost control, and ran off to the right side of the road. The vehicle struck jersey and sound barrier walls, then bounced back into traffic, where it was placed directly in the path of a box truck.

The box truck was overturned and the driver of the Hyundai fled the scene on foot. At this time, the driver has not been found. Virginia State Police (VSP) describe the driver as being a male wearing a gray shirt, but no other details were available.

VSP reports that there were no injuries.

Lanes were blocked to clear the roadway and vehicles. I-64 westbound was reopened 8:21 a.m.
