HAMPTON — On Sunday, May 16, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will close the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel (HRBT) in order to test the tide gates.

The eastbound span of the bridge-tunnel will be shut down from 2 a.m. to 3 a.m. while the westbound span will be shut down from 3 a.m. to 4 a.m.

The routine tide gate testing is to ensure that the HRBT’s facilities are prepared for possible adverse weather conditions.

VDOT states to expect delays while traveling during the test or to use I-664 Monitor-Merrimac Bridge-Tunnel as an alternate route.
