NEWPORT NEWS — On Monday, May 10 at approximately 9:30 p.m., the Newport News Police Department (NNPD) were called to the 300 block of Hilltop Drive regarding a “female in distress.”
Officers located two young children, one of whom as an infant. Both children were suffering from multiple stab wounds. Responding officers provided first aid to both children, but the infant died at the scene. The other child was taken to a local hospital and is listed in stable but critical condition at this time.
The mother of the children has been identified as 35-year-old Sarah Whitney Ganoe. She has been charged with one count of second-degree murder, malicious wounding, and two counts of felony child neglect.
“Any loss of life is difficult, but it’s especially challenging when it involves innocent children,” said NNPD Chief of Police Steve Drew.
The investigation remains ongoing.
